Scholarly Books to Read About Children’s Lit

Handbook of Research on Children’s and Young Adult LiteratureMollie Blackburn and Caroline Clark have a chapter in this book called “Becoming Readers of Literature with LGBT Themes”, which is worth reading.
LGBTQIA+ Books for Children and TeensThere are two editions of this book, one edited by Christina Dorr in 2018 and one edited by Kathleen Breitenback in 2023. This is a comprehensive guide to available books with LGBTQIA+ themes and characters, and is mostly geared for librarians. What stood out in Dorr’s book is that race is not addressed at all, other than providing the book covers for readers to reach their own conclusions. In addition, several books are included that do not actually address anything LGBTQIA for the reader, but might include a real life queer person for the discerning reader.
Rainbow Family Collections: Selecting and Using Children’s Books with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer ContentThis book was published in 2012, by Jamie Naidoo. This book offers tags at the end of each book summary, with labels like gay or lesbian, or mixed or Asian American. While race is addressed, Naidoo clearly defaults to white because tags about race are only present when it is something other than white. This list focuses on picture books and chapter books for infants up to age eleven, and is also geared mostly for librarians, but is still helpful for parents and teachers.
Reading Children’s Literature: A Critical IntroductionThis 2019 book by Carrie Hintz and Eric Tribunella does not focus on bisexual or LGBTQ themes specifically, but is a comprehensive guide on how to approach children’s literature as a scholarly reader. It also tackles the conceptions of childhood. The line between childhood and adulthood has several factors, including access to sex and sexuality, and while “adolescents are begrudgingly permitted limited opportunities for sexual exploration, sex and sexuality remain highly controversial even for young adults.”
